Tasting Tip #1: Try Some Sensory Games

July 25th, 2013

How do you sharpen your palate? You can read books and magazines about the subject but nothing beats getting some personal experience.

Seek out tasting events guided by industry experts… your local brew pub or beer bar may host tastings led by the brewers themselves.

Check out the resources of your local homebrew club, too.  In the past our club has had blind tasting of hops where you had to match the hops to their names.  It’s not as easy as you might think.  Another idea is to select a variety of malts, steep each in a separate glass, and then taste and attempt to match each to their names.

Host a vertical tasting, with homebrew or commercial examples of the same style and compare what you taste to your friends or even better, compare to what the BJCP says about the style or seek the opinion of some experts – many of the beer magazines have reviews of commercially available beers.

Have fun and taste more beer… Cheers!
